Low Dose Chemotherapy and Cancer in Dogs
Currently, there is some research exploring the use of low dose chemotherapy for treating cancer in dogs. The advantage of low dose chemotherapy is that there are less side effects than with full dose chemotherapy.
Chemotherapeutic drugs for dog cancer are all toxic chemicals. Many of them are derived from deadly mustard gas which was used in chemical warfare in World War I. They must be handled with gloves and masks. Even a small drop on the skin causes severe burns. Recently, a study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control showed that those who handle these drugs have higher rates of cancer, even though they are only detectable in the urine in small amounts.
There are basically 2 opposing trains of thought when it come to treating dogs with cancer. The first is adding more toxic chemicals like chemotherapy. While low doses reduce side effects, it is still a potent poison. Chemotherapy drugs are mostly effective only for a short term. Even if the cancer goes into remission, when it returns, it is usually much worse and resistant to any further treatment.
The second train of thought for treating dogs with cancer is to remove and eliminate all toxins and poisons from the body. There is a growing interest and movement towards more natural methods in treating canine cancer. Many of these natural treatments have been scientifically proven to be more effective than conventional chemotherapy, whether in low or high doses.
